Frequently asked questions
Online doctor consultations can be used for non-emergency medical issues where a physical examination may not be necessary. Most everyday illness can be treated by our GPs online. For urgent medical issues you should seek face-to-face advice from your GP or doctor.
Please Note: You must not use this service for emergencies or urgent conditions, such as (but not limited to) those listed below, as this may delay necessary treatment.
If you believe that you are in an emergency or life-threatening situation, contact your local Emergency Services immediately by dialling 999 or 112, especially if you or someone:
- has severe difficulty or is not breathing
- is having a heart attack or stroke
- has severe chest pain
- has severe abdominal pain
- has severe bleeding
- has lost consciousness
- is in an acute confused state and/or is having fits which are not stopping
- is in suicidal distress
- is experiencing an acute mental health crisis
For urgent medical issues, you should seek face-to-face advice from your GP or doctor.
Online consultations are not a replacement for regular health services you are normally registered with, such as a General Practice. You may still need to see a healthcare professional face to face. You may also be advised to contact the emergency services if the clinician feels it is necessary.
To ensure your use of the service is within scope, we strongly recommend you review in full what we can provide and how we do so, by reading the HealthHero Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy.

Each video consultation lasts approximately 12 minutes. If the GP is unable to adequately assess your condition during the video consultation, they may refer you to a face-to-face provider for a physical examination or diagnostic investigations.
During your online GP video consultation, the doctor will discuss your symptoms and concerns while visually assessing you. This allows for accurate clinical observations.
Based on this assessment, the doctor will create a personalized management plan which may include prescribing medication, referring you for further assessments or investigations, or issuing a medical certificate as needed.
After the consultation, you'll receive a copy of the doctor's notes and advice through your secure patient account for your records.
Our Online Doctor service typically doesn't offer repeat prescriptions due to the absence of continuity of care. There are exceptions; please refer to our Terms and Conditions for more information.
If clinically appropriate and where the service is available, our clinicians can issue private medical certificates or fit notes. These are issued at the discretion of the clinician. However, we do not provide extensions or prolongations of medical certificates or fit notes.
